Back in Newcastle

Thanks to the good offices of those nice people at Newcastle BC (cheers, Jean!) we’ll be setting up at Newcastle Farmers’ Market this Friday, May 20th – and, all being well, next month, on 17th June. It’ll be good to see friends there again, on both sides of stalls, and the forecast is good, so come along if you can. We’ll have tomato plants (though not the full range – Olirose are all gone, for a start) as well as the herbs.

Finally – it’s raining. OK, it’s lovely to have the solar panels generating all that electricity & filling up the hot water tank, but looking out of the window & seeing grey skies and wet streaks on the glass is very welcome. Our soil here is very sandy, and the first half hour of rain just puddles on the surface with a coating of dust, but it is now starting to soak in at last. We’ve been determined not to water anything (apart from the herbs in their pots, of course), but it was getting a bit touch and go for some plants, and the sheep & geese are running out of grass fast.

Shame I’ve still got to go out & pick asparagus for Shrewsbury tomorrow . . .

First markets of the season

Busy weekend last weekend – 3 markets at Shrewsbury, Rode Hall & Market Drayton. Good to see old friends at each of them, though some disappointment that we’re not doing veg plugs this year.

Stafford tomorrow. & the first tomato plants are ready; again, a restricted range this year, but some nice varieties. Glorious weather today (finally got a tunnel re-covered, & the solar panels generated their most since last August) – so let’s hope it continues, though we do of course need rain as wel . . .
